Universal Studio (Singapore)

Universal Studios Singapore, an integral part of Resorts World Sentosa, is a casino-resort off the south coast of Singapore and celebrated its grand opening on 28th May 2011. Occupying almost 124 acres, it is Asia’s first movie-theme park. The Park is home to 24 exciting rides and the world’s biggest single collection of DreamWorks Animation attractions, where familiar characters from movies like Shrek and Ice Age come alive. Visitors will come face-to-face with dinosaurs and Egyptian mummies and be able to challenge fear in adrenaline-charged rides in The Lost World, Hollywood Boulevard and Egypt.

Everyone enjoys the warmth of sunshine, but it can get intense in certain climates, especially the tropical climates in Malaysia and Singapore. We want the best of both world’s; the sun, but with control of its rays. We often seek the natural shade of trees because we want to be protected, while still feeling the comforts of being outdoors. Thus, Universal Studios Singapore well integrate tensile membrane, ETFE system and fabric façade in their design.

It is designed to go back to the resident’s cultural roots and create a community. Planting a forest to cover the hub wasn’t feasible, so instead it was decided that replicating the shade of the forest was the next best option.

Ensuring people feel comfortable, while enjoying dining and retail activities, sports, arts, culture and games was the outcome. Shadows depicting leaves were imitated within the foil cushions by providing shades of prints arranged in a recurring order. The canopy’s layer’s and print patterns supply high thermal performance while providing high amounts of natural light with anti-glare properties. The thin steel trees are seemingly rooted, reaching from the ground up to the ceiling to enhance the aesthetics of the forest concept.

Amid the make-believe world of movies, roller-coaster rides, theme dining and shopping, down-to-earth issues in the Park were not ignored. They provide an insulating shield against tropical temperatures, helping to cool building interiors and their immediate surrounds, mitigating urban heat island effect as well as contribute aesthetically to the ambience of the park. The Park is consequently rewarded with reduced energy consumption, improved sound insulation and increased life span of waterproofing membranes on the rooftops.
